Lakeshore first opened its doors in May 1952.
Originally planned as a new construction project near Percy Priest
Lake, the name Lakeshore was adopted. When construction restrictions
around the lake made building at that location difficult, the location
was changed to 832 Grove Avenue, but the name remained the same.
Although Lakeshore was intended as a home for
aged men, when time came for occupants, no men were ready to move
in. The decision was made to open also to women, and the rooms quickly
filled. From those earliest times, Lakeshore's women have always outnumbered
its men.
